Akakakushi / Shikata Akiko

So this is pretty old (the song), and I did the translation late last year; but here’s my version of Akakakushi – I’ve always wanted to translate it. The lyrics are pretty cryptic, so I tried to focus on the feel the song gave off, and they might not be too technically accurate. Sorry if any of them are wrong.

Akakakushi / Shikata Akiko

Lyrics by Hano Wataru
Written and Performed by Shikata Akiko

English Translation:

To the deity enshrined in the splendid arch,
an offering of camellia flowers
In the depths of the dreaming shrine,
they bloom beautifully all night long

On the twisted street corners at twilight,
who is the shadowy figure thinking of?
The rattling revolutions of the windmills
entices thoughts of you

It’s a secret, it’s a secret…what I hear is
A splendid kagura song of the boundary…

Sing!

On the other side
of the crimson, bright, phantom Torii gate
This distorted, twisted heart
shall devour all love

In the crimson, bright, phantom
vibrance of swaying fox-fire
These distorted, twisted bonds
Shall devour all love

One, two, three four, five, six, seven  eight…nine, ten, a hundred, a thousand
Spread, roll, and bind the hemp leaves. Grow strong and maninfest in number, soldiers
Negative influences, make way to good fortune; for we have harvested them thoroughly enough.

Is the unknown flower of the madder forest that beckons to me
an illusion?
Choosing an end to go to,
my beloved, sorrowful hidden crimson

The inverted streets are patchworked
rampantly with twisted karma
In its patchwork chain of grief,
which child will it go after next?

In the crimson, bright, phantom
end where wishes were consumed
These entwined, connected feelings
Shall allow all love

If there is a torii gate where God resides,
relieve me of this body, towards the palace of the Sun and Moon

On the other side
of the crimson, bright, phantom Torii gate
This distorted, twisted heart
loves everything-

In the crimson, bright, phantom
vibrance of swaying fox-fire
These distorted, twisted bonds
Shall devour all love

This distorted, twisted heart
shall devour all love
